Written in Water
“Written in water” by Ayumi Paul, is our second annual exhibition. Based in Berlin and Kyoto, the artist was invited in Athens to create an exclusive series of works inspired by Delphi and ancient craft. The artistic practice of Ayumi Paul actively attunes matter to reveal seemingly invisible or undetected connections and inherent potentialities. By focusing on the interplay of matter, sound and imagination, rather than static expressions, she highlights the malleable nature of space-time and endeavours to fold, bend, stretch, and form this phenomenon as a central medium of her practice. Her simultaneously conceptual and sensual body of work opens up new vocabularies, new lenses through which to relate to the world around us. Prior to dedicating to her continuously expanding multi-disciplinary approach, Paul studied violin and composition and gave her solo debut as an acclaimed violinist in 2003 at the Berliner Philharmonie followed by an extensive career as a performing artist with appearances in concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Barbican Hall, Tonhalle Zürich, Salle Pleyel, NHK und Suntory Hall Tokyo. Between 2023 and 2024 her solo exhibition “The Singing Project” at Gropius Bau in Berlin saw thousands of visitors crowd her exhibition to follow the artist ́s invitation to transform the museum into a place of continuous song.
